Excavator Buying Guide
Excavators combine strength and precision into one package. They offer just the kind of power, speed, and efficiency you need to get your project done right and on time. If you are interested in purchasing an excavator but are unsure about which type is right for your company’s needs, simply follow this guide from R & M Equipment.
Type of Work
When shopping for excavators, it is useful to have an idea of what kinds of materials you will be moving, what kind of terrain you will be operating on, and how often you plan to use the machine. Once these details have been settled on, finding a model that is right for you will become so much simpler, whether you are searching on your own or describing your ideal excavator to one of our helpful staff members.
Model Size & Weight
When it comes to excavator size, it comes down to a balance between the amount of material you need to move and the size of your workspace. Larger excavators can move more materials, but job sites in cities and other developed areas often don’t have enough room to make larger excavators practical. Of course, the weight of the materials you will be moving is also a factor. While smaller materials can be moved by most excavators, heavier materials may require a stronger base and therefore a larger machine.
Engine Power
Your excavator’s engine power will generally reflect its size, but even within these limitations, you may have a few options. While it may be tempting to just go with the option that offers the most power or whichever option is cheapest, it is usually better (and more economical) to think carefully about how much power you need and purchase a model that reflects those needs.
Bucket Capacity
Like engine size, bucket capacity will be determined in large part by how large your excavator is. The good news is that, unlike the engine, your excavator’s bucket can easily be swapped out. If you decide that your excavator’s current bucket isn’t performing as well as you want it to, you can simply invest in a new one.
